The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, aside from his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
